Information on Programs Offered: Dental Assistants perform various patient care, office and laboratory duties in both small and large dental practices. They're responsible for making patients as comfortable as possible, preparing them for treatment, and obtaining dental records. During a patient exam, Dental Assistants hand instruments and materials to dentists, and keep patients' mouths clear by using suction or other devices. Dental Assistants also sterilize instruments and equipment, prepare tray setups for dental procedures, and instruct patients on postoperative and general oral health care. Some Dental Assistants prepare materials for making impressions and restorations, expose radiographs, and process dental x-ray film. Dental Assistants also may remove sutures, apply anesthetics to gums or cavity-preventive agents to teeth, remove excess cement used in the filling process, and place rubber dams on the teeth to isolate them for individual treatment. Those with laboratory duties make casts of the teeth and mouth from impressions taken by dentists, clean and polish removable appliances, and make temporary crowns. Dental Assistants with front office duties schedule and confirm appointments, receive patients, keep treatment records, send bills, receive payments, and order dental supplies. A Massage Therapist uses manual therapeutic techniques to massage soft tissues (such as muscle) that have been affected by stress, injury and illness. The primary goal of massage therapy is to loosen and relax muscles and their surrounding connective tissue coverings, and relieve the painful muscle tension that inevitably erodes your energy level. Massage therapy stimulates the release of endorphins, the body's natural pain killers, and it increases circulation. It can also reduce stress, renew energy, increase flexibility, facilitate postural alignment, strengthen the immune system, help people reconnect with their inner self, help eliminate toxins, improve sports performance, and ultimately, maintain and improve an individual's health, vitality and well-being. Massage Therapists are usually trained in a variety of techniques, the most common being Swedish massage, hydrotherapy, sports massage, deep tissue, chair massage, reflexology, aromatherapy, lymphatic drainage and spa treatments. Some practitioners do focus on a particular technique. Massage Therapists practice in a variety of settings, such as private offices or massage therapy clinics, chiropractors' or doctors' offices, with sports teams, or at athletic clubs, resorts, spas, yoga retreat centers, golf courses, beauty salons, dance studios and cruise ships. Others may own their own practice. Some Massage Therapists have portable equipment and work at their clients' offices or homes. Medical Assistants perform routine administrative and clinical tasks in the offices and clinics of physicians, podiatrists, chiropractors and optometrists. In small practices, they are "generalists," who handle both administrative and clinical duties and report directly to an office manager, physician, or other health practitioner. Those in large practices tend to specialize in a particular area under the supervision of department administrators. Medical Assistants perform many administrative duties. They answer telephones, greet patients, update and file patient medical records, fill out insurance forms, handle correspondence, schedule appointments, arrange for hospital admission and laboratory services, and handle billing and bookkeeping. Clinical duties vary according to state law, and may include taking medical histories and recording vital signs, explaining treatment procedures to patients, preparing patients for examination, and assisting the physician during the examination. Medical Assistants collect and prepare laboratory specimens or perform basic laboratory tests on the premises, dispose of contaminated supplies, and sterilize medical instruments. Medical Billing and Coding Specialists are primarily responsible for submitting documentation of care they've provided to insurance companies. To do this, they handle day-to-day medical billing procedures, complete claim forms, schedule appointments, explain insurance benefits to patients and bill insurance companies, They also may be responsible for office bookkeeping and other administrative duties. Medical billing is a doctor's key to getting paid. Every medical office has a need to maintain patient financial accounts and arrange for collecting payment of services. This involves knowing the different methods of billing insurance companies and patients, understanding various collection methods, and having a good working knowledge of medical terminology. Coding- In order to be reimbursed for services, medical facilities must document all activities using correct medical terminology. This is referred to as ‘coding.' Pharmacy Technician Program Details Pharmacy Technicians help licensed pharmacists provide medication and other health care products to patients. Technicians usually perform routine tasks to help prepare prescribed medication for patients, such as counting tablets and labeling bottles. Technicians refer any questions regarding prescriptions, drug information, or health matters to a pharmacist. Technicians receive written prescriptions or requests for prescription refills from patients. They may also receive prescriptions sent from the doctor's office. They must verify that the information on the prescription is complete and accurate. To prepare the prescription, technicians retrieve, count, pour, weigh, measure and sometimes mix the medication. Then, they prepare the prescription labels, select the type of prescription container, and affix the labels on it. In hospitals, Pharmacy Technicians may read patient charts and prepare and deliver medicine to patients, and then copy the information about the prescribed medication onto the patient's profile. Pharmacy Technicians may also gather a 24-hour supply of medicine for every patient. Surgical Technologists, also called "Scrubs" and "Surgical or Operating Room Technicians," assist in surgical operations under the supervision of surgeons, registered nurses or other surgical personnel. They are members of operating room teams, which most commonly include surgeons, anesthesiologists and circulating nurses Before an operation, Surgical Technologists help prepare the operating room by setting up surgical instruments and equipment, sterile drapes and sterile solutions. They assemble both sterile and nonsterile equipment, as well as adjust and check it to ensure it is working properly. Surgical Technologists transport patients to the operating room, help position them on the operating table, and cover them with sterile surgical "drapes." Technologists also observe patients' vital signs, check charts, and assist the surgical team with putting on sterile gowns and gloves. During surgery, Surgical Technologists pass instruments and supplies to surgeons and surgeon assistants. They may hold retractors, cut sutures, and help count sponges, needles, supplies and instruments. Surgical technologists help prepare, care for, and dispose of specimens taken for laboratory analysis and help apply dressings. Some operate sterilizers, lights or suction machines, and help operate diagnostic equipment. 1 Campus Location Sacramento, CA
