Court reporting - a variety of career paths. Bryan College prepares students for a wide variety of career paths that match personal interests and desired lifestyles. - Official Court Reporter Official court reporters are employed by local, state, or federal court systems. They are responsible for capturing all the action in court and producing transcripts of the trial to all who request it.
- Deposition Reporter Deposition reporters have the same responsibilities as reporters working in court, but they usually work in lawyers' offices. Lawyers conduct depositions to discover what witnesses know and what they might testify to in court. Deposition reporters provide attorneys with transcripts of these proceedings.
- Realtime Captioning Captioning reporters do closed captioning of television so that programs may reach the hearing impaired. Congress has recently mandated that most programs provide this crucial service. Realtime captioners are therefore very busy these days working for television and cable stations, capturing news, emergency broadcasts, sports events and other programs.

Using the latest technology, a court reporter can transcribe a verbatim account of the spoken word, often in real time. Because of this unique ability, the court reporters’ domain is not limited to just the courtroom. Congress, conventions, classrooms, even television studios routinely employ the services only a well-trained court reporter can offer. Across the country, there’s a shortage of skilled court reporters. And because of the crucial service they provide, these professionals often command top salaries. According to the Journal of Court Reporting, reporters nationally earn an average of $54,900 a year, with over 17% of reporters in the United States earning between $75,000 and $100,000 annually. Regionally, such as in California, salaries can even be higher.Bryan College has created, EdFlex, a program to help you take advantage of the growing opportunities of the court reporting industry. This is the first program of its kind in California, and one of only a few in the country.
EdFlex allows you to attend classes one day each week (Thursdays 2 p.m.-8 p.m. or Saturdays 9 a.m.-3 p.m.) and complete the remainder of your course work conveniently online. All you need is a few items of equipment and you can complete your program at your leisure.
Bryan College immediately immerses students in shorthand theory. The mysteries of the steno machine are unraveled in a two-month "hands on" shorthand theory class. Here, students learn how a specialized machine with 22 keys and a number bar enables court reporters to write at speeds of more than 200 words per minute. Amazingly, students learn approximately 95% of what they will ever write in this two-month theory course. (The part-time night school class is proportionately longer.) After students master shorthand theory, they move to the 40-60 words per minute class. When students accurately write 60 WPM, they move to the 60-90 WPM class. Students continue to move up in speed at their own pace until they are in the "fast class," where students write more than 200 WPM. Students in the fast class work to qualify to take the California reporter licensing exam, the CSR (Certified Shorthand Reporter). In addition to speed building classes, students take a variety of academic classes. Bryan's academic program completes the student's education in court reporting. Bryan students master courses in civil and criminal law, punctuation, word usage, legal terminology, anatomy, medical terminology, computer technology, and other subjects. 2 Campus Locations: Los Angeles, CA Sacramento, CA
